Troy Stooksberry

June 3, 1925 — December 25, 2018

Troy B. Stooksberry was born June 3, 1925 in the rural community of Needmore, Delta County, Texas. He was the third child born to Homer and Viola Stooksberry. Troy’s family moved numerous times during his early years. While in elementary school in Ladonia, he was awarded a certificate as "Best Math Student in Fannin County, Texas". He graduated from Commerce High School in 1943. Shortly thereafter, he was drafted into the Army. He never went overseas, but served in the Military Police. One of his duties was riding troop trains to reign-in often rowdy, and sometimes drunken, soldiers.

After the end of World War II, he worked briefly at a company which manufactured farming implements. Sometime later, he joined the U. S. Postal Service, where he was employed for 32 years. His desire to farm never left him, and over the decades, he accumulated acreage in Hunt and Delta Counties.

Troy was not educated beyond high school, but he was a natural scholar. Over the years, he became an aficionado of the nuances of American Civil War history. On one occasion, he set a history professor straight on the facts of history.

He left the Postal Service in 1981 to farm and ranch full time. Once again, the natural scholar learned about cattle breeding and developed a locally well-regarded hi-bred herd.

His most recent years were spent in assisted-living homes in Dallas.

He is survived by two brothers, Cecil Stooksberry of Dallas, and Franklin Stooksberry of El Monte, California, plus 8 nephews and nieces.
