Sara (Keesee) Gibson

November 10, 1946 — July 17, 2021

Commerce

Sara Lou Keesee Gibson was born November 10, 1946, in Wewoka, Oklahoma to Joel and Ruby Keesee. She was a faithful Christian for 63 years, having been baptized into Christ on April 30, 1958 in Wewoka. She graduated as salutatorian from Wewoka High School in 1965 and went on to graduate in 1969 with a degree in Home Economics from Harding College (now University), where she also met her husband David. They married July 11, 1969 and enjoyed 52 wonderful years of marriage.

They were blessed with four children. Immediately upon graduating from Harding and then marrying, David and Sara moved to Scranton, Pennsylvania to work with the church there. In 1976 they moved to Abilene, Texas, where Sara started a sewing business to supplement the family income as David completed his Master of Divinity at Abilene Christian University. In 1980 they moved to Commerce, Texas to work with the Commerce church of Christ. While there, Sara graciously hosted hundreds of church members, college students and visitors. She also taught the nursery class for many years and often accompanied David visiting the sick and shut-ins and in members’ homes. Sara ran an in-home daycare for a number of years. The Commerce Rotary Club has thoroughly enjoyed Sara’s delicious catered meals since 2012. She loved worshiping God with her beautiful alto voice and volunteered her talent on many occasions for weddings and funerals. She kept her mind and body active with crossword puzzles, Sudoku, walking and gardening.

She was surrounded by her family as she took her last breath and entered eternity on July 17.

She is survived by her loving husband, David Gibson, her brother, Carl Keesee and his wife Mirja, and by four children—Melissa Dalbert, Andy Gibson and his wife Lisa, Monte Gibson, and Susan Darnell—and by eight grandchildren—Brittany, Elise, Haley, Grant, Natalie, Anastasia, David, and Lydia.

Memorials may be made to the Commerce church of Christ or to Northeast Texas Children’s Museum.
