Norma Alice Kilby, 98, who has lived in Commerce for three years, passed away after a brief illness on Monday, May 29, 2023. She was born on September 14, 1924, in Davis, West Virginia, the daughter of Mose David Tewell and Nettie Alcinda (Burley) Tewell. A memorial service will take place on Saturday, June 17, 2023, at 12:00 p.m., at Cross Trails Cowboy Church in Fairlie, Texas. A celebration of life will also take place later this year in Pembroke, Maine.
Norma attended high school at Davis High School in Davis, West Virginia. She graduated with the class of 1942. Following high school, she attended business school in Ohio. She spent some years working for the United States government as a typist before moving to Maine. In 1946, she married Granville Daggett in Pembroke Maine. Granville and Norma enjoyed twenty-six years of marriage, before Granville’s death. She and Granville were members of the Pembroke Ironworks Church. Norma moved to Texas in 1979 to be close to her children. She worked for a school district as food service manager. Eventually moving back to Maine, she married Don Kilby in 1983, whom she had known for years. Norma and Don worked as managers at the Country View Apartments, until she retired at ninety years old. Don passed away in 2008. In 2021, Norma moved to Commerce, Texas, to live with her son. She and her son were members of the Cross Trails Cowboy Church.
When Norma found free time, she enjoyed a variety of activities that kept her busy. She loved to volunteer, quilting, crafting, caning chairs, and braiding rugs. Norma was Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star in the Pennamaquan Chapter in Pembroke, Maine.
Left to cherish Norma’s memory are her children; Frances Hatch and husband, Richard, of Florida, David Daggett and wife, Kaye, of Virginia, Scott Daggett, of Texas, Pam Page, of Maine and step-son, John Kilby, of Maine; ten grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a sister, Charlotte Moore, of Georgia; along with several nieces and nephews.
Norma is preceded in death by her husband, Granville Daggett, husband, Don Kilby, her parents, Mose and Nettie Tewell, ten sisters, three brothers, daughter-in-law, Zorrie Daggett, son-in-law, Chris Page, and daughter-in-law, Rachel Kilby.
