Martha Moore, 83, stepped peacefully into heaven in the early hours of August 8, 2022. She was born February 28, 1939 in Sherman, Texas. Viewing/visitation is Friday, August 12, 2022 from 5:00-7:00 pm at Commerce Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held Saturday, August 13, 2022 at 2:00 pm at First Baptist Church, Commerce.
Martha moved to Commerce to attend ETSU where she met the love of her life, Johnny Moore. They married February 14, 1959 and spent most of their married life on the farm in Horton, Texas.
Martha spent 23 years of her married life as a full time homemaker and helping haul cotton to the gin. She got her first job outside the home in 1982 at ETSU. She started in the Financial Aid Office and soon moved to the Education Administration Department in August of 1983. She assisted many students in achieving their PhD in Education.
Martha was a member of First Baptist Church Commerce for 60 years. She was always active in the church, teaching VBS and 5 year olds for 40 years. She also assisted new believers by serving in the baptism ministry and as a committee member helping prepare the Lord’s Supper.
She is survived by her husband, Johnny, daughters Ramona Harper and husband Ned, Johnna Stephenson and husband Ronnie, and son Marcus Moore and wife Karen. She also leaves behind 7 granddaughters, Jessica and Elizabeth, Brittney, Rachel and Ragan, Mackenzie and Macie, 5 great grandchildren, her brother Tommy Bearden and wife Barbara, and sister-in-law Merle Bearden.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Erskine and Ann Bearden and brother Jimmy Bearden.
Martha was a strong woman of faith and raised her children in the church. She loved her family with all her heart, had a talent for crocheting and enjoyed working puzzles. She also enjoyed cooking for the family and providing meals for others. We will miss Mom in her sharp and firm voice saying “Johnny, stop!” when he was lovingly aggravating her.
Thank you to Hospice Plus and especially Nurse Teresa and joyful Simone. We will always remember how you lovingly cared for Mom. A special thank you to her caregivers Louise, Hansi and Ann Marie. You lovingly cared for Mom and she loved you all so much. You allowed us to be her husband and children.
Mom was diagnosed with the rare disease of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy in 2017. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to either: CurePSP at 1216 Broadway, 2nd Floor, New York, NY 10001 or online at
