Dr. Margaret Anne Wheat, 93, of Commerce, passed away on Saturday, October 28, 2015. She was born on April 2, 1922 in Paris, Texas, the daughter of Erasmus Wheat and Janera Thompson Wheat. Visitation was held on Monday, November 2, 2015 at Commerce Funeral Home. A funeral service took place on Monday immediately following the visitation with Reverend Michael Ryer officiating. She was buried at the Daingerfield Cemetery later that same afternoon.
Dr. Wheat was a music professor at East Texas State University for many years. She joined the faculty in 1948 and retired in 1992. During her tenure she taught music theory and composition as well as teaching keyboard. Personally, she was able to play many instruments, the keyboard being her primary medium. In recent years, she decided she wanted to learn to play the harp, so a close friend who plays began teaching her.
Dr. Wheat was the only child of Erasmus and Janera Wheat, who preceded her in death.
The family of Dr. Wheat is being served by Commerce Funeral Home, 1505 Washington Street. To convey condolences or to sign an online register, please visit www.commercefuneralhome.com.
