Judy Sue (Hornsby) Collette

September 20, 1951 — July 9, 2024

Klondike

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Judy Sue Hornsby Collette on July 9, 2024, at Christus Mother Frances Hospital in Sulphur Springs, TX. Judy was born on September 20, 1951, in Commerce, TX, and spent her earliest and latest years as a resident of Klondike, TX, which she chose as her final place of rest. She lived all 72 years of her life in Texas, deeply proud of her Texas lineage that traced back to the earliest settlers of the state.

Judy’s life was marked by her extraordinary educational accomplishments and her dedication to helping others. She graduated as Valedictorian from Cooper High School in May 1969. Her passion for learning led her to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Biology from East Texas State University in Commerce (later renamed Texas A&M Commerce) in August 1973, followed by a second Bachelor of Science from The University of Texas Health Sciences Center at Dallas in August 1974. Judy initially worked as a med tech at Parkland Hospital in Dallas but soon realized her true calling lay in helping others more directly. She pursued and earned a Master of Science in Social Work from the University of Texas at Arlington in May 1981, dedicating over 30 years to her career as a counselor and social worker. Throughout her career, she positively impacted the lives of thousands of individuals across East Texas.

Judy was an avid reader with a deep interest in philosophy, spirituality, and self-improvement. Her love for music was evident from a young age; she was a gifted pianist and an exceptional alto saxophonist, winning a state competition for her solo performance during high school. Judy’s spirituality was a cornerstone of her life, and she was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Longview, TX, for many years, where she found community and solace.

Beyond her professional and musical pursuits, Judy was deeply committed to serving her community. She volunteered with various charities for many years, tirelessly working to help underprivileged members of society. Her generosity and compassion were felt by many, and her contributions left a lasting impact on the lives she touched.

She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Marvin Hornsby and Claudia Edwards. Judy is survived by her cherished sons, Aaron Collette and Andrew Collette, who will continue to honor her legacy of love, wisdom, and compassion.

Judy will be laid to rest at Old Klondike Cemetery in Klondike, TX, close to her dear grandfather, Claude Edwards, whom she loved deeply.

The family will receive friends at a visitation to begin at 1:00 p.m. on July 14, 2024, at First United Methodist Church in Commerce.  This will be a special time to gather and honor Judy's memory and share stories of the remarkable woman she was.  A funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the church.

Rest in everlasting peace, dear Judy. Your legacy of love, kindness, and faith will forever be cherished.
