J. Gary Evans, Jr. passed away on September 8, 2023, at the age of 97, in Greenville, Texas. He was born on July 31, 1926, in Bloomington, Texas. Gary was a beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, great grandfather and great great- grandfather. He is survived by his older sister, Betty Jo Hampton, 98, of Seattle, Washington. Gary is also survived by son, Gary Randall (Dee) Evans of Heath, Texas; daughter, Marla Ann Evans of Euless, Texas; son, Roger Wynn Evans of Commerce, Texas; and son, Ronald Glenn (Kathleen) Evans of Rockwall, Texas.
Gary is survived by eleven grandchildren: Lori Evans of Nashville, Tennessee; Crystal Evans of Nashville, Tennessee; Ryan (Tiffany) Evans of Cumby, Texas; Keisha (Jeremy) Edwards of Commerce, Texas; Casey (Sarette) McMurry of Mansfield, Texas; Brittany Evans of Heath, Texas; Matthew McMurry of Dallas, Texas; Hayley (Nolan) Kelley of Burleson, Texas; Ricky Evans of Louisville, Kentucky; Sam Evans of Rockwall, Texas and Molly Kate Evans of Rogers, Arkansas. His legacy also included fourteen great grandchildren, and three great great-grandchildren.
Gary is preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Maxine Hughes Evans; parents, Jasper Gary Evans, Sr. and Nettie Wynn Evans; son, Russell Hughes Evans; and brothers James Wynn Evans and Richey Dean Evans.
After completing his education at Austin High School, Gary attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he was a trombone player in the UT Longhorn band. Upon graduation from the University he loved so much, he dedicated himself to a remarkable career as an Aeronautical Engineer. He spent 42 years in the Defense Industry, working with Temco and its mergers with LTV, E Systems, and Raytheon. Gary held the esteemed position of Program Director on the E 4 B Airborne Command Post, which included overseeing the Presidential Air Force One.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Gary had a passion for golf. He enjoyed spending his free time on the golf course, honing his skills and creating lasting memories with friends and family. He also loved his Longhorns and playing dominoes.
Military service was a significant part of Gary’s life. He proudly served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, contributing to the defense of our nation.
A ceremony to honor and remember Gary will be held at the Dallas Ft. Worth National Cemetery on Monday, October 2, 2023, at 11:30 am. Friends, family, and members of the community are invited to pay their respects and celebrate the life of this remarkable individual.
