Fred Blohm

Dr. Fred Blohm, 79, of Commerce, passed away on December 25, 2018.  A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 29 at the First Methodist Church of Commerce, followed by a private family graveside service at Brigham Cemetery.

Dr. Blohm was born March 8, 1939, at Fort Des Moines, Iowa to Fred H. and Lila Faye Blohm.  He graduated from high school in Mena, Arkansas, during which time he enlisted in, and later served nine years in the Arkansas National Guard.  Dr. Blohm earned a B.S. from College of the Ozarks, attending on an athletic scholarship.  While coaching/teaching in Helena, Arkansas, he married Anna Lou Allen in 1962.  He then earned an M.S. degree from the University of Memphis and an Ed. D. from the University of Arkansas.  He became a professor at ETSU and retired in 2004 as Head of the Department of Health, Kinesiology and Sports Study.

He served in leadership roles in many professional organizations including president and emeritus member of the Texas Association for Health, Physical Education, and Recreation.  Dr. Blohm was a member of the Texas Governor’s Commission on Physical Fitness.

He was a member and past president of Commerce Lion’s Club International and recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellow Award.

In addition to his parents, those preceding him in death include a sister, Gerry Wesson and husband, Harold; his wife’s parents; sister, Judy Faulkenberry; and brother-in-law, Joe Ben Allen.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Anna Lou Allen Blohm; children Daniel Blohm of Paris; Cynthia Blohm Yoakum and her husband, Kelly, also of Paris; Douglas Blohm and wife, Tania, of Granbury; grandchildren Hayley Ellis Runnels, Austin Ellis, Danielle Blohm and D.J. Blohm; great grandchildren Autumn, Hayden, Asa and Cooper; sister-in-law Sandy Allen; nephew Joe Allen and wife Kay; and niece Terri Mason and her husband, Rusty.

Serving as Honorary Bearers are Gene Casselberry, Clarence Jensen, Howard Lambert, Wyman Williams, Pete Smith, Ben Doughty, Jerry Hutton, Steve Siebenhausen, Jim Reynolds, Jim Stahl, Charlie Smith, and Commerce Lion’s Club members.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the First United Methodist Church Youth Program, 1709 Highway 24, Commerce, TX 75428.
