Scoot was a life-long resident of Commerce. He was a graduate of Commerce High School and East Texas State University before beginning a business career. He was married to Lynda Jean Williams of Commerce for 36 years until her passing in 2000. Scoot found a second love, Carolyn Michelle Burnett of Houston, Texas. They were married February 24, 2004. Scoot always was an active participant in organizations. He played high school football, life-long member of Sigma Chi fraternity, and held every office at Sand Hills Country Club. He loved traveling, golf, gardening and participating with his large family at their lake retreat. He was happiest when he had a "project" to plan and execute. His business career was varied over 50 years. However, he believed his crowning accomplishment was the development of Chaney Stores, a chain of retail tobacco, check cashing, laundry and tanning salons owned and operated by his sons.
