Donald J Reid

January 29, 1938 — September 15, 2016

Dr. Donald J. “Doc” Reid, 78, passed away at his home in Commerce, Texas on the morning of September 15th. Don is survived by his wife, Patricia Campbell Reid; children, Mark (wife: Melinda), Celia (Husband: Eric); grandchildren, Campbell and Rockney; all of Commerce. His sister Rilda and brother Jim live in Rochester, New York. His brother Gary lives in Eagleville, Tennessee. He is preceded in death by his father J J Reid of Hillsboro and his mother Gladys Moore Reid of Commerce.

Don was born on January 29, 1938 in Whitney, Texas.  He attended his own public Celebration of Life Service on April 30th, 2016 at First Baptist Church in Commerce. Don was a member of First Baptist and a long-time Sunday School teacher.

Don earned an M.S. in 1961 and Ph.D. in forage crops and soils in 1963 from Cornell University. Don worked for Shell Chemical Company, Michigan State University, and South Dakota State University. He started at East Texas State University in the fall of 1981 and retired from Texas A&M University-Commerce in 2004.

Don spent his retirement years raising and showing Manchester terriers and in a very short time earned a national reputation.  At one point, one of his dogs was the best female at the national Manchester show.  He loved to support the Dallas area professional sports teams.  Don also faithfully attended events to see his grandchildren perform.

There will be no further public events. The family would like you to know that contributions to the Don Reid Honorary Scholarship can be made to honor his memory.
